Motorsport, Sportrik Media - The ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Middle East has triggered further disruption across global motorsport, with the SUPER GT Sepang 300km round, originally scheduled for June 2026, officially postponed.

The decision follows the withdrawal of support from the Malaysian government, amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The situation has driven a sharp increase in international freight costs while creating significant operational uncertainty for racing series dependent on global logistics.

In a joint statement, the Gran Turismo Association and event promoter HARO Sports confirmed that the worsening conditions in the Middle East have introduced substantial logistical challenges, particularly in relation to air freight and international travel expenses for teams and personnel.

“Firstly, our prayers are with all those impacted by the current crisis in the Middle East. We hope for a peaceful resolution. While this is not what we envisioned for the continuation of the Malaysian round, we appreciate the understanding and support from all stakeholders,” said HARO managing partner Fahrizal Hasan.

Gran Turismo Association chairman Masaaki Bandoh acknowledged the complexity of the situation, describing the postponement as a difficult but necessary decision under current conditions.

“This was a difficult decision, and we thank our fans, entrants, sponsors, and media for their understanding during this challenging period,” he stated.

Should a replacement round not be secured, the 2026 SUPER GT season would be reduced to seven races, marking its shortest calendar since 2004. This highlights the scale of disruption caused by external geopolitical factors on international motorsport scheduling.

The ripple effects extend beyond SUPER GT, with Formula 1 teams also facing mounting logistical pressures. Rising transport costs, particularly in freight and aviation, have already influenced operational planning across the paddock. As part of this broader impact, Formula 1 has opted to cancel its April races in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain due to the evolving situation.

The dependency of modern motorsport on complex global supply chains makes it particularly vulnerable to geopolitical instability. Restrictions on airspace, fluctuating fuel costs, and disrupted shipping routes have collectively increased the financial and logistical burden on teams and organisers.

These challenges are forcing championships to reassess not only their calendars but also their long-term operational models. Promoters, teams, and governing bodies are now required to balance cost efficiency, safety considerations, and competitive integrity in an increasingly uncertain environment.

As the 2026 season progresses, attention will focus on how global motorsport adapts to these constraints, including whether alternative venues or revised logistics strategies can mitigate ongoing disruptions while maintaining the continuity of international racing programmes.
