Mercedes is reportedly developing an engine upgrade that could prove a killer blow to Ferrari's fading 2026 Formula 1 title hopes, thanks to the sport's catch-up mechanism known as Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO).
Despite being acknowledged in the paddock as having the best overall power unit package, Mercedes has earned the right to introduce a development step this year. This follows the FIA's analysis of different manufacturers, which concluded that, based on the internal combustion engine element that ADUO is judged on, Red Bull is more than 2% ahead of everyone else.
As a result, Mercedes can bring one power unit upgrade this season and one in 2027, while Ferrari, Audi, and Honda can bring two this year and two next. Red Bull is not yet allowed any improvements.
Earlier this season, Mercedes had declared that, while it would make use of the extra test bench hours and development spending opened up through ADUO, it did not plan to introduce any hardware changes. However, The Race has learned that there has been a change of plan, and efforts are now underway at Mercedes' Brixworth engine facility to ready an ADUO step before the end of the campaign.
No date has been set in stone for the introduction of the upgraded specification, but it is anticipated to likely occur during the upcoming triple header comprising Azerbaijan, Malaysia, and Singapore. This timing could coincide with when George Russell must take a grid drop penalty for fresh power unit components, as he cannot get through to the end of the season on his current pool.
Clues may have emerged at the Italian Grand Prix through the new parts Kimi Antonelli did and did not introduce there. The world championship leader started from the back of the grid due to an engine change penalty, but Mercedes chose not to fit a totally new power unit, instead restricting changes to the internal combustion engine, battery, and control electronics. They did not fit a fresh turbo, MGU-K, exhaust, and ancillaries, even though taking new versions would have been without consequence.
Holding fire on the full suite of components suggests Mercedes plans to bring those parts later this season, leaving the door open for upgrades. Modifications are likely to focus on other areas, with the turbo being the most obvious area for gains. This strategic move poses a significant threat to Ferrari's fading title hopes.
