Fernando Alonso was critical of back marker F1 drivers

Scathing remarks delivered by Fernando Alonso concerning the quality of drivers at the rear of the Formula 1 grid have been branded as exaggerated by former grand prix driver turned pundit Ivan Capelli.

The controversy unfolded following a first-lap collision involving the double world champion and Alex Albon, an incident that severely damaged his Aston Martin challenger and ultimately relegated him to a disappointing 16th-place finish.

Expressing deep frustration after the race, the veteran Spaniard claimed that a full third of the F1 grid operates at a very low quality level, arguing that starting further down the order inherently exposes competitors to constant avoidable hazards.

Weighing in on the fierce remarks, Ivan Capelli strongly disagreed during an interview with Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, asserting that the outspoken driver had crossed a line with his generalized assessment.

In my opinion he exaggerated. Because, in any case, if we want to catch even those who are truly racing at the back, we have to remember that a few years ago, when they had more competitive cars, they were even capable of winning races, Capelli stated.

He further elaborated that forcing a sub-par machine beyond its natural limits exponentially inflates the probability of driver errors and wheel-to-wheel contact, noting that machinery does not always cooperate with a driver's exact demands.

Analyzing the generational divide, Capelli suggested that younger drivers adapt much more fluidly to contemporary car technology and aerodynamic regulations, whereas established veterans must consciously rewire years of deeply ingrained racing instincts and automatisms.

Despite the occasional fiery outburst in the media pen, Capelli concluded that the veteran competitor remains fundamentally driven by genuine enjoyment of the sport and an unrelenting desire to write the final chapters of his storied career.
