Mercedes Could Bring Big Upgrade Package Earlier Than Planned

Mercedes is weighing up the possibility of bringing their major upgrade package forward. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has revealed that the Brackley-based squad could introduce new developments sooner than initially expected, depending on the pressure from rivals.

Speaking to the press in the Zandvoort paddock, Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained that the big package was originally scheduled to arrive in a few races' time. However, the team is still deciding whether to use it immediately or delay it for further wind tunnel development.

“Our big package will come later, maybe in a couple of races,” said Antonelli, as reported by the Italian media. “Now the team is evaluating whether to bring it earlier or continue developing it to make it even bigger. It's not clear yet when we'll bring it.”

Earlier speculation pointed to a possible debut in Malaysia, but with Antonelli's comments, the door is open for an earlier introduction. The team has been waiting for this package since the Canadian Grand Prix, and now all eyes are on the perfect timing to maximize its impact.

Mercedes strategy since the start of the season has been to invest heavily in development to build an advantage. As a result, they can afford to be patient and stay competitive while waiting for the right moment. “The team did a great job giving us a very competitive car,” Antonelli added. “This allowed us to wait a bit longer for the upgrades, and hopefully when they come, we can return to the competitiveness we had early in the season.”

At Zandvoort, Mercedes brought a small change to the W17. Antonelli downplayed it, saying it's only to improve cooling and reduce aerodynamic drag, not for performance. “It's a small thing, just for a small improvement. If it turns out to be a performance gain, that's a bonus,” he explained.

This season's competition is extremely tight, with every team racing to bring effective upgrades. Antonelli stressed that the key to success is not just how many updates you bring, but how effective they are on track. “Whoever can bring not only more new parts, but also developments that work, will make the difference,” he concluded.
