Step by step, Mazda has finally made its true foray into the electric arena. Long known for its punchy petrol engines and poetic Kodo design, the Japanese automaker is now expanding its zero-emission lineup with the Mazda CX-6e, a midsize electric SUV we tested on the roads around Dusseldorf. This isn't just an electric motor dropped into an old body; the CX-6e was built from the ground up as a crossover that's quiet, agile, and efficient.
In tight city streets, the CX-6e's steering feels light and precise. Once you hit the derestricted German autobahn, its character shifts: stable, planted, and serene. This combination is rare in its class, and Mazda seems to have deliberately tuned the suspension and weight distribution to keep the driver connected to the road.
Instantly Recognizable Design
Up front, the CX-6e radiates Mazda's signature design language. There's a wing-shaped element with sequential lighting when the car is opened, closed, or charged, creating a strong three-dimensional visual effect. The body lines are crisp yet clean, complete with aerodynamic air channels that guide airflow through the grille and over the sculpted hood. Other notable details include shark-fin digital mirrors and integrated air vents in the D-pillars. Muscular shoulder lines, pronounced wheel arches, and slim taillights complete the premium look.
Inside, technology greets you with a 26-inch ultrawide touchscreen, a head-up display, voice recognition, and gesture control. Electric Heart and Range
Mazda offers only one powertrain for the CX-6e. A 78 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery powers a rear electric motor producing 190 kW (258 hp). Performance feels instant and responsive, typical of EVs. In the WLTP cycle, this SUV promises up to 484 km on a single charge. As for charging, a maximum DC power of 200 kW allows a 10-80% top-up in about 24 minutes, while the 11 kW onboard charger makes AC charging practical for daily use.
Priced under 50,000 euros, the CX-6e offers an attractive package: solid range, advanced tech, and of course, that signature Mazda driving feel. In an increasingly crowded EV market, the CX-6e arrives not just as an alternative, but as a statement that electric can still be fun.
