Motorsport, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has been credited with contributing to a renewed surge in motorsport interest in Germany, particularly through his involvement in GT3 racing categories.

Since the first retirement of Michael Schumacher in 2006, Germany’s motorsport audience has steadily declined. The situation was further impacted when the German Grand Prix dropped off the Formula 1 calendar after 2019, returning only once in 2020 at the Nürburgring due to calendar disruptions caused by the global pandemic.

Beyond calendar challenges, the rising cost of grassroots motorsport has also limited accessibility for younger generations, reducing entry pathways for new drivers and fans. This structural issue has contributed to a broader contraction in the national motorsport ecosystem over the past decade.

DTM director Thomas Voss highlighted Verstappen’s role in reshaping public perception. He noted that the presence of a Formula 1 world champion in GT3 machinery has encouraged fans to explore alternative racing platforms beyond grands prix, which are often significantly more expensive to attend.

"Motorsport is not exactly cheap, unlike sports such as football or swimming," Voss stated.

"In the era of Michael Schumacher, motorsport could hardly cope with the number of young people and newcomers."

"Overall, Verstappen has opened many people's eyes to GT racing and therefore also to the DTM, showing that there is something beyond Formula 1—competitive racing with cars that closely resemble road vehicles."

"It was extremely important that a driver of his stature took such a step. For the DTM and the entire GT category, this has had a major impact, as people have realised there is more to motorsport than Formula 1."

"This represents a significant step forward for all of motorsport. The level of public attention generated by such a megastar benefits the entire discipline."

Verstappen’s involvement outside Formula 1 has created renewed momentum for GT and DTM categories, particularly in re-engaging traditional markets such as Germany. With increased visibility and broader appeal, this trend could play a key role in strengthening the foundations of European motorsport in the coming seasons.
