The governing body FIA has officially announced a major strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services to integrate advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing into the development of future aerodynamic regulations for F1. This collaboration establishes the tech giant as the official artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure partner, aiming to enhance aerodynamic simulations, streamline global licensing systems, and optimize internal operations.

Through this technical alliance, Computational Fluid Dynamics testing will leverage cutting-edge hardware to unlock faster, higher-fidelity simulations. Artificial intelligence shortcuts will be layered on top of these simulations, alongside automated checks of the rulebook itself. However, generative intelligence will not be deployed to prompt design ideas yet, as the primary objective remains focused on accelerating and supporting human engineering efforts.

Utilizing this cloud infrastructure at the core of the computational work brings advanced capabilities into the governing body's virtual wind tunnel. This supports the creation of concept cars designed to evaluate critical parameters, such as downforce loss when following another vehicle and verifying whether the regulations produce the intended wheel-to-wheel racing action. The virtual engineering process involves assembling 3D digital drawings into complete models, with airflow divided into millions of microscopic cells to solve complex physical equations.

Deputy Technical Director Dominic Harlow explained that traditional processes are executed using open-source software packages alongside various post-processing tools. Enhancements to data viewing and manipulation are now significantly amplified by intelligent algorithms. Surrogate approaches trained on historical data are being explored to shortcut simulations, yielding higher productivity with lower compute time, reduced engineering hours, lower energy consumption, and decreased costs.

Although the current technical regulations are only in their opening phase, development work is already underway for a potential brand-new car and engine formula targeted for introduction by 2030. Harlow believes that cross-correlating wind tunnel data, computational fluid dynamics, and artificial intelligence will be instrumental in shaping these future regulations and enhancing virtual development workloads.
