Max Verstappen has voiced serious concerns regarding the state of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) track surface ahead of the Formula 1 race weekend. The four-time world champion warned that the severe bumps could potentially damage drivers' spines as ground effect cars push through the Austin layout.
The Dutchman's alarm was raised after observing recent racing categories like the World Endurance Championship tackle the circuit. Based on what he witnessed, the asphalt features extreme undulations that pose a genuine physical threat to open-wheel drivers.
"From what I saw in WEC, it was extremely bumpy. I’m not really looking forward to that, to be honest, for your spine," Verstappen told media outlets including Motorsport Week, emphasizing that this issue has been spiraling out of control for years.

Addressing the circuit organizers, the leading Red Bull Racing star dismissed excuses regarding the underlying soil conditions, pointing out that adequate foundational reinforcement should have been prioritized long ago rather than relying on superficial grinding fixes.
"It’s very bad. Of course, you can use the excuse that the soil is the problem, but then you should have known that and you need to make sure that you reinforce it more," Verstappen stated, concluding that a complete track overhaul is the only permanent solution despite the massive financial cost involved.
