Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen experienced a notable change within the Red Bull Racing garage during the 2026 Australian Grand Prix weekend at Albert Park. The development involved a key personnel adjustment in the chief mechanic role on the Dutch driver’s side of the team.
Earlier in January, Red Bull confirmed the recruitment of Mike Payne from Aston Martin to become chief mechanic for rookie driver Isack Hadjar. The move followed the departure of Matt Caller, who had previously served as Verstappen’s chief mechanic before joining Audi as part of its Formula 1 project.
Initial expectations suggested that Jon Caller, who worked with Yuki Tsunoda during the previous season, would replace his twin brother on Verstappen’s side of the garage. However, during the Melbourne race weekend the situation appeared different from what had originally been anticipated.

At Albert Park, Payne was seen working directly on Verstappen’s RB22, while Jon Caller was assigned to Hadjar’s side of the garage. The unexpected configuration became one of the notable operational changes observed in the paddock during the opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Payne brings extensive experience to the role. Before joining Red Bull, he spent five years with Aston Martin and previously worked for around six years with Williams. That background provides Verstappen’s crew with additional technical expertise within the garage environment.
Within a modern Formula 1 team structure, the chief mechanic plays a crucial role in ensuring that the car is fully prepared for every session during a race weekend. Responsibilities include overseeing the car’s assembly, coordinating mechanical work, implementing technical updates, and inspecting the car for potential damage following on-track incidents.
Beyond technical responsibilities, the chief mechanic also acts as a leader within the car crew. The position requires strong organisational ability, deep mechanical understanding, and rapid decision-making under pressure to ensure all members of the garage operate efficiently as a unified team.
In several cases, the role has also served as a stepping stone to higher management positions within Formula 1 teams. One example is Lee Stevenson, a former chief mechanic for Verstappen who later moved to Audi as a team manager within the German manufacturer’s F1 programme.
With the revised technical structure around Verstappen’s garage, Red Bull begins the 2026 campaign with a slightly adjusted operational setup. Stability among the mechanics and technical staff will remain an important factor as the team aims to maintain competitiveness throughout the long Formula 1 season.
