Tension filled the air at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos as Max Verstappen clocked a blistering lap time of 1 minute 11.622 seconds to top the final practice session of the 2026 Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The four-time world champion pushed his Red Bull to the absolute limit, forcing the team to fine-tune aerodynamic setups in search of optimal mechanical grip through Interlagos' iconic sweeping corners.

Despite setting the pace in the final hour of practice, the Dutch driver's efforts on track will ultimately prove in vain for Sunday's starting grid. A hefty 30-place grid penalty looms large over Verstappen's weekend after his team fitted a brand-new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, and exhaust system to his car, forcing the Red Bull ace to start the Grand Prix from the very back of the grid.

The battle at the sharp end of the timesheets was breathtakingly close, with mere thousandths of a second separating the front-runners. Kimi Antonelli delivered a stellar performance to secure second place for Mercedes, finishing just 0.025 seconds shy of Verstappen's benchmark. Meanwhile, Lando Norris slotted into third position behind the wheel of his McLaren, trailing the pacesetter by a mere 0.131 seconds.

The session was not without drama, particularly for Scuderia Ferrari as technical gremlins struck their garage. Lewis Hamilton was forced to cut his running short after just 35 minutes when he brought his SF-26 back to the pits trailing wisps of smoke from the engine cover. Both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc had fresh internal combustion engines installed ahead of the final practice hour in Brazil.

Further down the order, George Russell claimed fourth for Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc fifth and Oscar Piastri rounding out the top six for McLaren. Young talents such as Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson impressed for Racing Bulls inside the top ten, while Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Alpine's Franco Colapinto continued gathering vital tyre telemetry on the challenging Brazilian tarmac.
