Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has been backed to re-engage in discussions with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team as Oracle Red Bull Racing faces a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The suggestion comes from former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer, who believes conversations between Verstappen and Mercedes are likely to resume. The two parties were previously linked in 2025 when Red Bull experienced a dip in performance, although Verstappen ultimately remained with the team for the current campaign.
Competitive dynamics have shifted notably this season. Mercedes has emerged strongly with two wins in the opening rounds, while Red Bull has slipped down the competitive order and has yet to mount a consistent challenge at the front. This contrast in performance is seen as a key factor that could reignite discussions.

“The conversation is going to happen because Red Bull will not win the title this year. They look like they have too much work to do,” Palmer said on the F1 Nation podcast.
Palmer highlighted that Verstappen’s competitive mindset is unlikely to align with Red Bull’s current position, where podium contention has become increasingly difficult.
“Max is not here to finish eighth in qualifying or to miss out on fighting for podiums. He will be looking for a way into Mercedes because they have the best car,” he added.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has already responded to the speculation, stating he is satisfied with the current driver line-up of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, both of whom have delivered strong performances under the new regulations.
However, Palmer stressed that Mercedes cannot afford to ignore the opportunity to sign Verstappen should it arise. He pointed out that the team’s early-season advantage may diminish as rivals develop their cars, making long-term strategic decisions increasingly critical.
“If you are Toto and you have a chance to sign Max, while other teams are closing in, you cannot ignore it. We have already seen conversations happen before, and there was some tension,” Palmer explained.
He also referenced internal dynamics that surfaced previously, including comments from Russell regarding speculation that Verstappen could replace him. This underlines how potential transfer discussions could impact not only the driver market but also team stability.
With Mercedes currently leading the competitive order and Red Bull still searching for solutions, Verstappen’s future remains a central narrative in the 2026 season. The situation is expected to evolve further over the coming races, particularly as the championship battle intensifies heading into the European phase.
