Marc Marquez had to concede defeat to Marco Bezzecchi in MotoGP Aragon qualifying on Saturday morning. The reigning champion's unbeaten run in Aragon sessions since joining Ducati came to an end as he watched his Italian rival snatch pole position. The tension at the final corner was palpable as Marquez pushed to the limit, but a near-crash moment ended his challenge.
Bezzecchi, still nursing injuries from Sachsenring, has been dominant since Friday, topping free practice, FP2, and qualifying. "I'm happy to grab the pole position, but now the real job starts," he said. He predicts a tough fight with both Marquez brothers, as Alex Marquez is also fast and will start from second.
Marquez admitted Bezzecchi's pace is better. "There is one rider, that is Marco, that at the moment has a better pace than us. So, sometimes you cannot do anything. It's just try to do your best, and it's what we are doing," he said with a hint of resignation. Despite this, he remains optimistic because his best time in FP2 was on a medium tyre, not soft, which could be an advantage in the race.
With a 40-point deficit to championship leader Jorge Martin and 9 points behind Bezzecchi in second, Marquez knows Aragon is a golden opportunity to close the gap. However, he is also aware that Bezzecchi has the race pace edge. "We need to wait and take the maximum," he added.
Meanwhile, Alex Marquez is the dark horse ready to surprise. "I'm happy with this front row. It was the objective. This morning we suffered a lot, trying a few things. But in qualifying we turned things around in a really good way," he said. He emphasized that the final result will depend heavily on the start and the first laps.
Martin will start from fifth, between Raul Fernandez and Pedro Acosta. A late crash brought out yellow flags, affecting riders' attempts to improve. With such a tight grid, the Sprint Race promises to be a fierce battle worth watching.
