MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing arrives at the Spanish MotoGP 2026 in Jerez as championship leader and the rider to beat, with Marc Marquez openly identifying him as the primary target—an assessment Bezzecchi accepts with appreciation but approaches with caution.

Bezzecchi’s dominant start to the season has positioned him at the centre of the title fight, with consistent victories and race-leading performances establishing him as the reference point on the grid. Recognition from a multiple world champion such as Marquez reinforces that status, but also elevates expectations and competitive pressure heading into the European phase.

“First of all, I’m happy to hear that from him. It’s always a nice compliment,” Bezzecchi said.

“But in the end, it feels like a new beginning. We had quite a long break, everyone has worked hard, and we will see how things go.”

The Italian explained that the recent break in the calendar was used to balance physical preparation with recovery, including time away from racing activities. This approach is part of a broader effort to maintain performance consistency over an increasingly demanding schedule.

“I trained well, even if a bit differently than usual. I also had time to stay at home with my family and friends.”

“Rest is also important, not just training.”

Looking ahead to Jerez, Bezzecchi acknowledged his previous competitiveness at the circuit but emphasised that direct comparisons with past performances are limited due to evolving technical conditions and competitive dynamics.

“It’s a track I like, and I’ve been fast there in the past.”

“We have to keep working all the time. As soon as you relax, everything can be over.”

Despite the RS-GP appearing highly competitive externally, Bezzecchi underlined that continuous improvement remains essential, both in terms of rider execution and technical development.

“It’s impossible to judge from the outside. There is always room for improvement, both in my riding style and on the bike.”

“More than anything, I need to improve, but the bike can also be better.”

This reflects Aprilia’s development philosophy, where performance gains are achieved through the interaction between rider adaptation and ongoing technical refinement.

Bezzecchi also admitted that the strength of his start to the season exceeded his own expectations, though he remains focused on maintaining momentum rather than reflecting excessively on early results.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect results like this. It’s a very pleasant surprise.”

“I’m happy with how the season is going, but there are still things to improve.”

Regarding the pressure of leading the championship, he described it as different in nature compared to previous seasons, yet equally demanding from a mental standpoint.

“They are two different kinds of pressure, but both are heavy.”

“Pressure is also a kind of privilege, even if it’s not easy to manage.”

In terms of competitive references, Bezzecchi pointed to Jorge Martin as a benchmark in Sprint races, highlighting the Spaniard’s consistent strength in the shorter format.

“He is very strong in the Sprint, maybe the strongest. I need to learn from him to better understand this type of race.”

The Spanish Grand Prix will therefore serve as a critical test of Bezzecchi’s ability to sustain his early-season advantage under increased scrutiny. With rivals closing in and expectations rising, his capacity to maintain focus, manage pressure, and extract consistent performance will be decisive in shaping the next phase of the 2026 MotoGP title fight.
