Ahead of the race weekend at the iconic Phillip Island circuit, factory rider Brad Binder humorously remarked that competitors might need a watercraft instead of a motorcycle if heavy downpours hit the coastal track on race day for the 2026 season.

The South African's history at Phillip Island features mixed fortunes, ranging from a costly crash in the Sprint race to securing a top-ten finish alongside his fellow KTM stablemates. Despite previous setbacks, the legendary circuit remains a firm favorite for the seasoned contender.

While the veteran thoroughly understands the layout, unpredictable natural elements continue to pose the ultimate test for teams and riders alike. According to the experienced competitor, erratic gusts of wind present a far greater hazard than standing water when piloting a premier-class prototype.

«You can never know exactly what is going to happen here,» Brad Binder stated regarding the volatile conditions in Australia. «When it comes to rain, it depends on the amount. But the wind is definitely more critical. It often starts to build up and hits unpredictably in gusts across the track, leaving very little space and time to correct it on a MotoGP bike.»

Aside from aerodynamic challenges caused by crosswinds, fluctuating asphalt temperatures create complex dilemmas for tire longevity and braking efficiency. Cold surface temperatures can easily drop the temperature on the right shoulder of the tires, turning every corner into a high-stakes scenario as the veteran embraces the upcoming challenge.
