The American manufacturer is set to develop a brand new rally car in partnership with its long-standing technical partner M-Sport. Precise details of the forthcoming vehicle remain strictly under wraps, and Ford has yet to reveal which of its road-going production models the new challenger will actually be based on for the championship.

Amid heavy speculation from fans and pundits regarding the project, M-Sport managing director and FIA vice-president Malcolm Wilson addressed questions about whether the machine could possibly be modeled after the iconic Ford Mustang. However, the veteran motorsport figure firmly refused to disclose any specific identity of the upcoming rally contender.

“How on earth could I tell you that? You’ll have to wait and see. I don’t even know myself at the moment,” Wilson said with a laugh to RallyJournal. Despite keeping the core model identity a secret, Wilson did manage to confirm one definitive detail to the media, stating clearly that “It will be a new model.”

Ford and M-Sport have shared a successful working relationship in the WRC for decades. In recent years, the British squad has overseen Ford's competitive motorsport program without receiving full factory backing from the parent manufacturer. Now, that enduring partnership is officially entering a fresh phase as Ford prepares to step up its factory WRC involvement significantly.

The development of the brand new rally weapon is still sitting at an early stage. According to the team leadership, the objective is to hit the ground running with initial testing slated around the middle of next year. Wilson also emphasized that this major return to rallying was not a hasty choice, noting that the plan followed lengthy discussions before receiving final corporate approval very recently.
