Luca Marini has welcomed his new MotoGP 2027 teammate Senna Agius with high enthusiasm. The Italian rider believes Agius will enjoy a significant advantage in his rookie season due to the upcoming tyre transition.
"I knew this since a long time," Luca Marini said when asked about his new teammate. "He showed fantastic potential in Moto2. He achieved great results and he's riding very well."
Agius, who will join Tech3 KTM, is one of several rookies confirmed for the 2027 MotoGP grid. They arrive at a unique moment as MotoGP switches to Pirelli tyres, a brand Moto2 riders like Agius have used since 2024.
Marini agrees with Marc Marquez's opinion that next year's rookies will have an advantage because of the tyre brand change. "I think in 2027 the guys from Moto2 will have a very big advantage compared to the past transition between Moto2 and MotoGP," he explained.
According to Marini, this is the perfect moment for Moto2 riders to step up to MotoGP. "For everybody that had this great opportunity to go directly to MotoGP in 2027, it's fantastic. I think it's the perfect moment for them, so I think that everybody is expecting a lot from them from the beginning because maybe the next MotoGP will be much closer to the Moto2 than to the current MotoGP."
Marini added that if he were in Moto2, he would push hard to arrive in MotoGP in 2027. "I think that they can be very fast and really close to the top guys from the first race."
However, Marini does not see Agius's Pirelli experience as a personal advantage. "No, I don't think so," he said. "In the end it will be very important on the mental side to understand very well the tyres and understand how to deal with them because it's the biggest question mark of next year."
With this dynamic, the 2027 season promises exciting competition, especially for rookies like Agius who are expected to challenge at the front immediately. Marini himself will be both a mentor and a rival to his new teammate.
