Francesco Bagnaia has finally broken his silence on the viral video that captured his conversation with Fabio di Giannantonio in the TV pen after the MotoGP race at Misano. The footage, which spread like wildfire on social media, sparked speculation that Ducati was restricting his ability to fine-tune his bike. But the two-time MotoGP champion insists his words were taken completely out of context.
“There have been many times where I have been asked if the team is supporting you, and I always said, ‘yes, the team is doing the maximum to help me’,” Bagnaia said at the Red Bull Ring ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, as quoted by Motorsport.com. “What happened in the last race in Misano was a totally disrespectful thing by DAZN. The video that was recorded was out of context. We were speaking about a thing that is not completely secret, because we were speaking there in a public setting. But it’s out of context, because the video is not complete. We were speaking about one more thing.”
Bagnaia admitted that his final words in the conversation were not the right ones. “Everybody has a difficult moment, everybody has frustration inside them, and sometimes you say things in the wrong way,” he explained. He then clarified his intentions: he had already tested several changes on the bike to address rear-grip problems, and Ducati was no longer allowing him to do so because he had done it many times before. “What was coming out of my mouth was in the wrong way. But then what happened next was a disaster for me, because it’s completely out of respect,” he said.
The Italian also highlighted the importance of a respectful relationship between journalists and riders. “The relationship between journalists and riders needs to have respect inside. I think I’ve always been very kind to all of you. I’ve never been rude, I’ve never said anything wrong. I’ve tried to have a good relationship with everybody, because I know how important it is to have a good relationship with the journalists, just because you are the ones that speak to the world for us, and what happened for me is not correct,” he added.
Furthermore, Bagnaia confirmed that his relationship with Ducati remains unchanged after he discussed the contents of the video with the management. “I’ve talked to them, and there’s no issue. We are still solid,” he concluded. This statement helped quell the speculation that had been swirling on social media.
This incident is another blow for Bagnaia, who is struggling to overcome his bike’s performance issues. At Misano, he endured another difficult race, and the video seemed to reinforce the narrative of internal tension at Ducati. However, this clarification shows that Bagnaia and the team are focused on technical solutions, not pointing fingers.
With pressure mounting, Bagnaia hopes to rediscover his best form soon. He realizes that every word and action will always be scrutinized, especially in the age of social media. “I just want to focus on racing and give my best for the team,” he concluded.
