Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Liam Lawson has revealed that he deleted social media from his personal devices after receiving sustained online abuse, describing certain platforms as a “toxic place” amid the pressures of modern Formula 1.

The New Zealander first faced significant backlash when he was selected to replace Daniel Ricciardo during the 2024 season. Criticism intensified when he stepped in for Sergio Perez at Oracle Red Bull Racing, before later being reassigned to Visa Cash App Racing Bulls after two races.

Lawson admitted that the volume and tone of online commentary affected him, but stated that his wellbeing improved markedly once he removed social media applications from his personal devices. While he continues to post on Instagram for fans and to stay connected with friends and family, he has been absent from X for nearly a year.

“It’s so much better. So, so much better.”

“It can be such a toxic place. I feel for people. I also left school when I was young, but I feel like I scraped through the age where social media was big.”

He reflected on how the growth of digital platforms has changed the social landscape, particularly for younger generations who cannot easily detach from online scrutiny.

“In New Zealand at least, Facebook was probably the main one. Instagram was pretty new. I feel like, yeah, New Zealand is really behind in some ways.”

“So good because now bullying in school is something that you can’t escape when you go home because of social media.”

In an era where Formula 1 drivers operate under constant global visibility, digital engagement has become intertwined with professional life. Lawson’s decision highlights a personal strategy to manage external pressure and protect mental wellbeing while navigating the competitive demands of the Red Bull structure.

As the 2026 season approaches, Lawson’s priority remains performance consistency on track. Managing off-track pressures, particularly in the digital sphere, has become an increasingly relevant factor in sustaining long-term stability at the highest level of motorsport.
