Formula 1 is back with a fresh move. Ahead of the second half of the season kicking off at the Dutch Grand Prix, F1 has unveiled a global marketing campaign called Five Lights. The 90-second film is narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Colin Farrell.
The film, which debuted on 16 August, features all 22 current drivers on the grid. Set to the track Reign by UNKLE featuring Ian Brown, the video captures the tense moment before the race start—when the five red lights illuminate one by one. That familiar 'countdown' is the heart of the campaign.
The Five Lights campaign will run across digital and social media platforms until 13 September. F1 is also taking over six high-profile advertising spots in the UK and the US. In London, the campaign lights up Piccadilly Circus and The Outernet. Across the Atlantic, it appears at Times Square in New York, Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip, and on Sunset Boulevard and The Moxy in Los Angeles.

Emily Prazer, F1's Chief Commercial Officer, explained the thinking behind it. "Five Lights captures one of the most powerful moments in Formula 1, when anticipation, excitement and pressure all come together just before the race begins," she said. "As we return for the second half of what has already been an incredible season, we wanted to create something that reflects the emotion of our sport and the connection our fans feel with the teams and drivers every race weekend."
Early reactions have been positive. At the time of writing, the video has racked up over 141,000 views on YouTube and 11,000 likes—a sign of fans' eagerness for racing to resume after the summer break.
The campaign arrives just before F1 resumes at the Dutch GP. The championship standings are intriguing. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads the drivers' title with 219 points, ahead of Lewis Hamilton on 169 and George Russell on 160. In the constructors' battle, Mercedes sits top with 379 points, followed by Ferrari with 307 and McLaren with 220.
By spotlighting the most emotional moment in racing, F1 seems to want fans to feel that same thrill when the lights go out. Will this campaign boost F1's appeal in the second half? We'll have to wait and see.
