Max Verstappen's qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos came to an early halt right after the opening segment. This was certainly not due to any lack of pace from the four-time world champion on the soaked asphalt, as he finished the first part of the shootout as the third-fastest driver. The real hurdle stemmed from the Dutchman's requirement to start the grand prix from the back of the grid after taking a fresh power unit exceeding his seasonal quota.

In an effort to preserve precious tyre sets, the 74-time Grand Prix winner stepped out of his cockpit as soon as Q1 concluded, while his Red Bull Racing teammate Isack Hadjar pushed onward to record the seventh-fastest lap. Following grid penalties handed to George Russell and Charles Leclerc for similar power unit changes, the young French driver was promoted to fifth place on the starting grid.

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Laurent Mekies spoke to reporters after a draining session that saw a lengthy one-and-a-half-hour red flag delay due to torrential rain. "It has been a very busy day here in Sao Paulo with a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes. The team made some overnight adjustments, and Max's performance in the final practice session was a very promising sign of the progress we managed to make," Mekies explained.

Mekies acknowledged that a tailored strategy was necessary given the unique circumstances surrounding their lead driver. "We knew that using a new power unit and taking the subsequent penalty meant we had to adopt a different approach for Max's qualifying run, especially on a wet track. We concentrated on learning as much as possible about the car without taking unnecessary risks in such tricky conditions," he added regarding Hadjar's solid performance.

Looking ahead to the main race in Brazil, the team boss remains realistic yet hopeful about the unpredictable nature of Interlagos. "There is still a lot of work to do, but we now have a clearer picture of our situation and where we need to improve. The race will be a massive challenge, particularly for Max starting from so far back, but we know how unpredictable races in Brazil can be, and we will focus on ourselves to give both drivers the best fighting chance," Mekies concluded.
