Toyota began the first full day of Rally Japan in total control, occupying the top four positions in the overall standings. Elfyn Evans holds the lead with a 15.7-second advantage over Oliver Solberg, with Sébastien Ogier and Sami Pajari rounding out the dominant lockout.

Despite the team's collective success, Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala expressed confusion regarding Sami Pajari's inconsistent performance. While Pajari demonstrated exceptional pace in the first and final stages of the day, including the fastest time in the closing test, he suffered an inexplicable loss of time during the fourth and fifth stages.

Latvala noted a "small question mark" over why the gap grew so significantly during those specific mid-day stages. Analytically, this is unusual because Pajari did not suffer any obvious mechanical failures or accidents. The discrepancy between his perceived rhythm and the actual clock timings suggests a technical or tactical anomaly that the team must analyze to prevent further losses.

Toyota's superiority is further highlighted by the struggles of Hyundai. Their lead driver, Thierry Neuville, trails the leader by a massive 58.2 seconds in fifth place. This vast gap confirms that Hyundai continues to struggle with their asphalt setup, failing to match the traction and stability provided by the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1.

The battle at the front has also evolved into a psychological conflict. Latvala admitted that a mental game is being played between Evans and Ogier. He described Ogier as a racer who excels at psychological warfare, using mental pressure to destabilize rivals—a tactic designed to force errors as the intensity of the competition increases.

Rally Japan resumes on Saturday with eight special stages scheduled. Toyota's primary objective will be to maintain their formation while solving the mystery behind Pajari's mid-day time loss. With a significant buffer over Hyundai, the focus remains on managing the internal battle between Evans and Solberg as they fight for the eventual victory on Sunday.
