The opening practice session at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos kicked off the race weekend with high intensity. Lando Norris successfully secured the fastest lap time in the first practice session of the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, showcasing the early pace of the McLaren challenger ahead of his main rivals.
The British driver posted a benchmark lap of 1 minute 11.717 seconds on soft compound tires. He edged out Kimi Antonelli by just 0.082 seconds, with the young Italian showing strong form for Mercedes, while Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top four with extremely close gaps among the top four constructor outfits.
Behind the tight battle at the sharp end, the Red Bull Racing garage saw mounting frustration from the reigning world champion. Verstappen vented over the team radio regarding persistent downshift issues on the RB22 chassis. "Unacceptable, man. Unacceptable, these downshifts. What the hell?" he ranted, before later complaining that his steering was getting progressively heavier to turn.

The session also featured several rookie outings and test drivers getting valuable mileage around the Interlagos layout. Rafael Camara, preparing for his future seat with Haas, finished the session in 18th place. Meanwhile, Gabriele Mini delivered a stellar performance for Alpine by claiming seventh position, slotting just ahead of Franco Colapinto.
Drama struck early when Audi driver Freddie Slater suffered a complete electrical shutdown, triggering a red flag just 12 minutes into the hour. Read our in-depth analysis to stay updated on all technical battles and championship implications heading into the weekend.
