Lando Norris successfully secured pole position in a dramatic, rain-hit Formula 1 qualifying session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Interlagos. Torrential downpours forced an immediate red flag in Q1, triggering a delay of more than an hour in what became one of the longest qualifying sessions in the sport's history.
After the two-and-a-half-hour ordeal at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Norris emerged on top by outpacing George Russell’s Mercedes by 0.204 seconds. This triumph marked his third pole of the 2026 season and completed a hat-trick of pole positions at Interlagos over the past three years. The tricky wet conditions demanded absolute precision on intermediate tires and flawless throttle application through every apex.
Russell was left frustrated after being instructed by his race engineer to abort his final flying lap due to heavy traffic. The British driver was subsequently handed a five-place grid penalty for taking on a fresh power unit, promoting newly crowned world champion Andrea Kimi Antonelli onto the front row alongside Norris. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc dropped ten spots following a Ferrari engine penalty, paving the way for stunning performances from Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg to lock out a surprise second row for Audi and Racing Bulls.

Veteran champion Fernando Alonso also starred by driving his Aston Martin into Q3 for the first time this year. Read our in-depth analysis of the wet weather chaos, grid penalties, and comprehensive race weekend coverage right here.
