Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes-AMG Petronas have opened the 2026 Formula 1 season with strong momentum, but Toto Wolff has stressed the importance of managing expectations amid growing external attention.
In only his second season in Formula 1, Antonelli has delivered a standout start, securing his maiden victory at the Chinese Grand Prix before following it with a second consecutive win in Japan. Those results made him the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1953 to achieve back-to-back victories, while also becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to lead the drivers’ championship, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Lewis Hamilton.
The early success has intensified scrutiny, particularly in Italy, where comparisons with Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna have emerged. Discussions have also extended to whether Antonelli could become Italy’s first world champion since Ascari. However, Wolff has firmly rejected such narratives, emphasizing that they are premature given Antonelli’s stage of development.

“When it comes to Kimi, we’ve always been very clear in our objectives,” Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.
“Now we are in the second year, and he continues to develop in the way we had hoped, but without raising expectations to irrational levels.”
Wolff highlighted that external pressure, particularly from Italian media, must be carefully managed to avoid disrupting Antonelli’s progression. He also underlined the role of the team environment in balancing support with performance demands.
“Comparisons to Senna are something I don’t enjoy. He is a 19-year-old, and it is more about reducing expectations and pressure rather than increasing them,” he added.
From a performance perspective, Wolff acknowledged that Antonelli’s victories have been supported by situational factors such as race strategy and in-race dynamics, including safety car timing. In contrast, team-mate George Russell, who won the season opener in Australia, has been affected by those variables, leaving him nine points behind Antonelli heading into the Miami Grand Prix.
Despite the strong results, Wolff reiterated that Mercedes is not setting immediate expectations of a title challenge this season. The priority remains on development, consistency, and experience-building as Antonelli continues to adapt to the demands of Formula 1.
“We were hoping to find an outstanding driver, but considering his age and relative lack of experience, it would take at least a season for him to settle in,” Wolff explained.
“He is showing progress with fewer mistakes, but we are not expecting an all-year miracle. Sometimes results go your way, sometimes they don’t, and that is part of racing.”
With a positive performance trajectory, Antonelli remains aligned with Mercedes’ long-term development plan. However, maintaining consistency will be critical as the championship progresses, with the upcoming Miami Grand Prix set to provide a further benchmark in the evolving 2026 title fight.
