Josh Pierson is set to make his full-time IndyCar Series debut in 2027 after securing a multi-year deal with AJ Foyt Racing. The 20-year-old makes the jump to top-tier machinery following a four-season stint in the IndyNXT feeder series.
Pierson has meticulously worked his way up through the single-seater ladder over the past six years. In addition to his formula car experience, he has also tackled multiple campaigns in LMP2 machinery across both the IMSA and WEC paddocks.
Because his resume did not instantly trigger the automatic approval threshold outlined in IndyCar's new driver standards system, he was required to complete a rigorous single-day evaluation test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier in the month.
Having successfully demonstrated sufficient speed and total control of the machine during the test, he was granted official clearance to secure a seat. AJ Foyt Racing had monitored the young talent closely through the latter portion of the season, but final paperwork was contingent on passing the evaluation.
“Racing in IndyCar has been my dream for as long as I can remember,” Josh Pierson stated regarding his upcoming campaign.
“The variety of racing I’ve done has all been in preparation for this incredible opportunity. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way and tremendously appreciative of the commitment of a new partner that will be announced shortly.”
Pierson stands as the first officially confirmed rookie for the upcoming 2027 grid. He will share the garage alongside last season's standout rookie of the year Dennis Hauger as his direct teammate.
Through this lineup, AJ Foyt Racing is anticipated to field one of the youngest driver combinations on the grid as they aim to improve upon the 17th and 24th place championship finishes from the previous season.
