Formula 2 title hopeful Alex Dunne has completed a crucial IndyCar test session in Alabama amid intensifying speculation surrounding his racing future for the upcoming 2027 season. The young Irish driver remains deeply embroiled in a fierce three-way title battle for the 2026 FIA Formula 2 championship, sitting 18 points adrift of the current standings leader.
With only two rounds remaining on the calendar, the championship crown is still very much within reach for the Alpine junior driver. However, with Formula 1 seats at an absolute premium, he may be forced to look elsewhere even if he manages to secure the F2 title this year.
Current Formula 2 regulations explicitly state that the reigning champion cannot return to the feeder series and must transition elsewhere for the following season. Conversely, if a driver finishes runner-up or lower in the standings, they retain eligibility to return and compete for the championship again.

Having previously been part of the McLaren driver development setup, Dunne has been linked with a potential return to his former outfit MP Motorsport should he remain in the European single-seater pyramid. Despite those traditional pathways, a full-time seat in the American IndyCar series has emerged as a very viable option.
Despite having only logged a single morning test behind the wheel of an IndyCar machine, Dunne admitted he thoroughly enjoyed the machinery after posting the benchmark time during a session that featured experienced racers like Conor Daly.
"The car was super cool. I think it’s definitely got quite a bit more power, a lot more downforce than what I’m used to," Dunne told American outlet RACER. "To jump in and be comfortable pretty quickly, and I think I was quickest when I got out of the car in the morning, I really enjoyed it."
The American open-wheel championship has consistently served as a clear alternative route for single-seater hopefuls when the ultimate Formula 1 dream fails to materialize, mirroring paths previously taken by recent F2 graduates.
"I think naturally, with the path that I’ve been on and what I’ve worked towards, the goal will always be to be a Formula 1 driver," Dunne concluded. "I think there comes a time when, realistically, that chance becomes more difficult, and I’ve always said that the next best option for me and the thing I’d love to do most has always been IndyCar."
