Jorge Martin claimed a dramatic victory in the Austrian MotoGP sprint race at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday after Pedro Acosta crashed out of the lead with three laps remaining. The Aprilia Racing rider completed the 14-lap race with a 1.026-second advantage over Marc Marquez, reclaiming the championship lead by three points.
Acosta looked set to deliver a home win for KTM after capitalising on an early battle between Martin and Marquez to seize the lead on the opening lap. However, an unforced error at Turn 2 on lap 12 of 14 dashed his hopes. Martin, who had dropped to eighth on the first lap, recovered to secure an unlikely victory.
The race began with Martin cleanly away from pole position, but he ran too deep into Turn 1, coming under immediate pressure from Marquez on the following straight. The two title rivals clashed at Turn 2, with Marquez surging into the lead as Martin ran out of road and plummeted down the order. Acosta also benefited from the incident, moving up to second after dropping behind Marco Bezzecchi to fourth at the start.
Entering Turn 3, Marquez missed his braking point by a fraction, and Acosta sent his KTM up the inside to take the lead. Once ahead, Acosta quickly extended his advantage, pulling out a one-second lead in just three laps. Meanwhile, Martin was on the move after falling to eighth, picking off rivals one by one. On lap 7, he passed his team-mate Bezzecchi to move into podium position, before forcing Marquez wide at the start of the following lap to retake second.
At that stage, Acosta had a comfortable 2.5-second lead, and Martin was unable to make any inroads. But with victory seemingly on the horizon, Acosta made a rare error at Turn 2 and crashed, handing Martin a surprise win. The 2024 champion took the chequered flag a full second clear of Marquez, retaking the championship lead by three points.
Behind the duo, Bezzecchi completed the podium on the other factory Aprilia. Ai Ogura finished fourth, followed by Alex Marquez in fifth and Francesco Bagnaia in sixth. Johann Zarco, Fermin Aldeguer, and Brad Binder completed the top ten. Acosta's crash was a blow for KTM on home soil, underscoring the fine margins between victory and defeat in MotoGP.
With this result, Martin leads the championship by three points over Marquez. The Austrian sprint race served as a stark reminder that consistency and composure in the closing stages are as crucial as raw speed. Acosta, who had been impressive all weekend, must accept the bitter reality that a single mistake can undo everything.
