Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Jolyon Palmer has warned that Red Bull Racing must carefully manage the level of information shared with Gianpiero Lambiase ahead of his future move to McLaren.
Red Bull confirmed that Lambiase will leave the team in 2028, before McLaren officially announced his recruitment. The 45-year-old is set to step down from his role as race engineer to Max Verstappen and take on the position of chief racing officer within McLaren’s structure.
In the short term, however, Lambiase will remain active within Red Bull as the team works to recover from a challenging start to the season. This transitional period creates a sensitive operational scenario regarding internal data and strategic information.

Palmer highlighted that Lambiase’s extensive knowledge of Red Bull’s systems and processes represents a valuable asset that could benefit a direct rival once the move is completed.
“He’s another person who goes to McLaren with full knowledge of how Red Bull operates,” Palmer said on the F1 Nation podcast.
While acknowledging that the transfer is not immediate, Palmer stressed that the potential flow of competitive intelligence remains a key concern for the team.
“He’s bringing the rival’s information in-house to McLaren—not immediately—but Red Bull have got to be careful,” he explained.
Palmer also drew parallels with driver transfers, where teams often limit access to sensitive updates and data as a contract transition approaches.
“Like driver swaps, they don’t want ‘GP’ to be learning all the information before the switch in 2028 either,” he added.
In the context of Formula 1’s highly competitive and data-driven environment, controlling information flow is a critical component of maintaining a competitive edge. Red Bull now faces the challenge of balancing short-term operational needs with long-term protection of its technical and strategic assets.
With Lambiase continuing in a key role during the transition phase, how Red Bull manages internal access and knowledge distribution will be pivotal in safeguarding its position against a strengthening McLaren in the seasons ahead.
