The leaderboard at Rally Paraguay took a dramatic twist on Friday afternoon as Sami Pajari surged to the front after Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans suffered a puncture. The Finn now holds an 11.9-second advantage over Hyundai's Hayden Paddon.
Pajari is on a hot streak, having won Rally Estonia and Rally Finland back-to-back. A third consecutive victory is within reach, but he remains cautious: "It is only Friday done. I think the days to come are the most demanding days," he said.
Evans, the championship leader, acknowledged the challenges ahead. "The tyre situation is somehow not a surprise. We are in for a tough day tomorrow, with a different set of challenges," he added. He sits third, 56.3 seconds adrift.
Adrien Fourmaux (Hyundai) is fourth, just under two minutes off the lead, with Josh McErlean (M-Sport Ford) completing the top five. Home hero Diego Dominguez leads WRC2 and is an impressive sixth overall, ahead of Gus Greensmith and Oliver Solberg.
Rally Paraguay continues with nine special stages on Saturday before concluding on Sunday. With the gaps tight and terrain treacherous, the battle is far from over.
