James Vowles has opened up about Williams' ongoing struggles in the 2026 season, revealing that the team is running several major projects to correct the development errors made last winter. In the team's official debrief after a tough Dutch Grand Prix, the team principal admitted those mistakes are still costing them dearly.
"We made mistakes this winter, which we're still paying for today," Vowles said. "The drivers are paying for it on the car we've delivered on track."
However, there's a silver lining: the commitment of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to stay has given the team a massive boost. Both drivers signed contract extensions ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, with Albon extending until the end of 2027 and Sainz committing to a multi-year deal.
Vowles described the contract announcements as a monumental change for the organization. "It's hard to put into words what it means to the organisation when that happens," he said. "When we started to show the future beyond here, their commitment came to the forefront. That's really important to me, to the team, to everyone."
Behind the scenes, the Grove-based squad is not sitting idle. Vowles revealed that numerous projects are underway to dig out the root causes of their winter failures and implement long-term fixes. "We have huge numbers of projects in the background to make sure we're digging out what went wrong this winter and fixing it for the long term," he explained.
While some car upgrades are expected later this year, the primary focus remains on fundamental solutions. "That's our commitment today, as it will be in six months' time," Vowles asserted.
Williams currently sits ninth in the constructors' championship with just 11 points. There's still plenty of work to do, but at least the team's future direction is now clearer.
