MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Johann Zarco of LCR Honda revealed a crucial performance insight after setting one of the fastest laps of the 2026 United States MotoGP, despite his race being compromised by an early incident.
Zarco’s race at the Circuit of the Americas was effectively ended on lap two following contact with Enea Bastianini, which caused him to crash at Turn 9. The incident occurred during a tightly packed midfield battle, eliminating his chances of fighting for points from an early stage.
He explained that the collision was not the result of an aggressive move, but rather a consequence of both riders attempting to change direction simultaneously.

“I wasn’t trying to overtake at that moment, but we had to change direction together.”
“He came back to the line, we made contact, and I crashed. It was a racing incident, nothing to complain about.”
Despite the setback, Zarco chose to remount and continue, anticipating the possibility of a red flag scenario similar to the Moto2 race. When that did not materialise, he used the remainder of the race as a technical test session, focusing on refining traction and power delivery.
“I tried to understand a track where I usually struggle. I experimented with traction and power.”
This approach led to a standout performance moment. On lap 10, Zarco recorded a 2m2.073s lap time, making it one of the fastest laps of the race. It was quicker than any lap set by race winner Marco Bezzecchi and second only to the new lap record set by another Aprilia rider.
From a technical standpoint, the lap demonstrated that Honda’s potential performance ceiling is higher than its overall race results suggest. Notably, the time was achieved through strong sector consistency rather than a single standout segment.
The lap was officially validated, with no track limits violations, and was not aided by slipstream, as Zarco was running in isolation at the time. This further reinforces the significance of the performance as a genuine indicator of capability.
Zarco described the lap time as an important signal for the team’s development direction.
“It’s a sign that it can be done. Now we need to understand how to do it consistently.”
However, he also acknowledged that consistency remains the primary limitation, as he was unable to replicate the pace in subsequent laps, with a significant gap to his next best effort.
From a broader perspective, Honda continues to face challenges in translating potential into race results. The manufacturer’s top finisher, Luca Marini, ended the race in ninth place, highlighting the gap to front-running competitors.
Zarco ultimately retired from the race in the closing stages, with no realistic chance of scoring points. The decision allowed the team to focus on analysing the data gathered during his extended run.
Looking ahead, the findings from Zarco’s lap provide a clearer direction for Honda’s development. If the team can convert this peak performance into a repeatable baseline, it could unlock meaningful gains over the remainder of the 2026 MotoGP season, although the competitive gap to rivals remains a significant challenge.
