The premier class race weekend at the Lusail International Circuit once again presented distinct technical challenges for the grid, including Johann Zarco as the spearhead for the Japanese manufacturer. The French rider immediately pushed hard in the opening practice session to secure a top-ten finish, reaffirming his status as the most competitive Honda rider under the night desert lights.
Despite finishing as the top RC213V runner, the experienced LCR rider could not hide his initial surprise at the gap to the front-runners. During the opening session, he found himself trailing by over a second compared to the benchmark lap time set by Marc Marquez, prompting a rigorous evaluation of chassis balance and aerodynamic configurations within the garage.
Entering the afternoon practice session under the floodlights, the performance of the machine showed positive progression. Although the relentless pace from Ducati riders such as Fabio Di Giannantonio remained out of reach, Zarco successfully secured a direct spot into Q2 after putting together a strong flying lap.
"I was initially quite surprised by how much time I was losing to the front group at the start," Zarco explained regarding his opening day at Lusail. He added that his second time-attack run was hindered by minor mistakes under pressure, though fortune ultimately favored him to avoid slipping out of the top ten.
The internal manufacturer battle once again highlighted the veteran's superior racecraft over his stablemates. Given the physical demands and high technical requirements of extracting performance from the bike, his capability to maximize the package remains vital for keeping Honda fighting in the upper midfield.
