Isack Hadjar Could Miss Dutch GP, Red Bull Has Lawson Standby Plan

Red Bull might have a new face alongside Max Verstappen for his final home race in Formula 1. Isack Hadjar is reportedly dealing with a wrist injury picked up during a gym session ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, putting his participation in doubt.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, as cited by Motorsport.com, Laurent Mekies' squad has yet to make a formal decision and declined to comment when contacted. But a contingency plan is already in place: if Hadjar cannot race, Liam Lawson would step up to the senior team, with reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda filling Lawson's seat at Racing Bulls alongside Arvid Lindblad.

The team can still wait before finalizing, but the main consideration is Hadjar's recovery. The 21-year-old needs to be fit enough to return for the Monza round in two weeks. Earlier this week, Hadjar, like Verstappen, unveiled a special Delft Blue helmet design for the Zandvoort weekend, a nod to his maiden F1 podium there last year—a race that ended with him breaking his trophy into two pieces.

For Lawson, a potential stand-in appearance would be a reward for a strong season. The New Zealander sits ninth in the standings, best of the rest behind F1's top four teams, and has scored points in all but three weekends. It would also mark his first race for Red Bull since last year's Chinese Grand Prix, following his demotion ahead of the Japanese GP.

Should Hadjar indeed miss out, it would also signal Tsunoda's F1 return after losing his seat at the end of last year. The Japanese driver is officially reserve for both Red Bull teams, but promoting Lawson makes more sense given his experience with the 2026 machinery. Tsunoda has also been linked with an IndyCar seat at Meyer Shank Racing for 2027, as Motorsport.com reported earlier this week.
