A chaotic two-and-a-half-hour qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace has set the stage for an unpredictable race day. Lando Norris claimed his third consecutive pole position in Brazil after mastering the wet conditions at Interlagos, but the rest of the starting grid was turned completely upside down due to a wave of heavy engine penalties.
The shake-up began immediately behind the front row as George Russell, who initially secured second place in qualifying, was handed a five-place grid penalty. The Mercedes squad was forced to install a new internal combustion engine on his car, dropping the British driver down to seventh place on the starting grid and promoting Kimi Antonelli to the front row alongside Norris.
The subsequent penalties paved the way for standout performances further up the order, with Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg capitalizing to lock out impressive spots in the second row. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc faced severe setbacks after a stellar qualifying lap, sliding down to fourteenth on the grid due to a ten-place penalty for extra power unit components.

The penalty woe reached its peak for Lewis Hamilton, whose difficult weekend compounded with massive grid drops totaling 65 positions following another engine change. The multi-time world champion will line up just ahead of title rival Max Verstappen, who also carries heavy penalties into Sunday's Grand Prix.
With a heavily mixed-up grid and high degradation expected, race strategy will dictate who can salvage a result from the chaos. Read our in-depth analysis and stay updated with the latest paddock news right here at Sportrik Media.
