Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has been urged to reclaim momentum in the 2026 Formula 1 title fight against his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
The intra-team battle at Mercedes has emerged as a defining storyline in the opening phase of the season, with both drivers sharing victories across the first three rounds. Russell secured the opening win in Australia, but Antonelli responded with consecutive victories in China and Japan, shifting the balance of momentum within the team.
Antonelli now leads the championship by nine points, becoming the youngest driver and the first teenager in Formula 1 history to top the standings. This development has intensified scrutiny on Russell, who entered the season as the more experienced driver expected to lead Mercedes’ title campaign.

Former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok believes Russell must deliver a decisive response to prevent Antonelli from consolidating his advantage. According to Chandhok, maintaining internal momentum is critical in a championship fight where both drivers operate within identical technical machinery.
"I'm intrigued to see what happens when we go to Miami, because that was one of the tracks where he had a clear advantage over George last year," Chandhok said.
Miami proved to be one of Antonelli’s strongest circuits in the previous season, alongside Baku, where he was able to outperform Russell on outright pace. Notably, Antonelli secured sprint pole at the venue, underlining his ability to extract performance on street circuits with similar characteristics.
Historically, Russell held an average advantage of around three tenths of a second over Antonelli in qualifying trim last year. However, that gap has narrowed significantly in 2026, reflecting the Italian driver’s rapid development and improved consistency at the highest level.
While Russell still retains a marginal edge in overall pace, Antonelli’s track-specific strengths—particularly in Miami—could again play a decisive role. This places added importance on Russell’s execution across the weekend, including qualifying performance and race starts.
Chandhok stressed that the internal competitive dynamic at Mercedes will be shaped by who can assert control in key moments as the season progresses.
"George will need to strike back in terms of that internal team momentum," he added.
Russell has previously suggested that the five-week break between Japan and Miami may neutralise momentum, offering a reset for all drivers. However, in practical terms, consistency remains central to maintaining a championship challenge.
As the season resumes in Miami, Russell faces a critical juncture to reapply pressure on Antonelli and prevent the points gap from widening. With Mercedes currently holding a performance advantage over its rivals, the internal duel between its drivers is expected to be a decisive factor in determining the outcome of the 2026 title race.
How Russell responds will not only influence his championship position but also shape the strategic dynamics within Mercedes as the campaign enters its next phase. In a tightly contested season, marginal gains and execution under pressure are likely to define the final outcome.
