George Russell has revealed his reaction after being told he had a slow puncture during the British Grand Prix while fighting for a podium position at Silverstone.

Russell was battling Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton when Mercedes called him in for an unscheduled pit stop due to the tyre issue. The extra stop dropped him down the order and appeared to make it harder to limit the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The setback came in a wider context of difficult recent results for Russell. A run of incidents and missed opportunities had already damaged his title challenge heading into Silverstone, making the tyre problem another major interruption during a race in which he had been fighting near the front.

“I didn’t even really react,” Russell said on the Silver Arrows Radio Show.

“We’ve had our fair share of bad luck this year, and when that slow puncture came, I was just overtaking Max for P3. And then I was like: 'here we go again'.”

Despite losing ground after the pit stop, Russell quickly recovered by passing Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris. His race then swung further back in his favour when Antonelli and Max Verstappen hit trouble, promoting him back into the podium positions.

Russell ultimately finished second as the race ended under a safety car. He also moved ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who chose to pit when the safety car was called, making timing and strategy decisive elements in the final podium order.

“But if somebody told me, as I drove out of the pits in P7 behind Hadjar, we were going to finish second 14 laps later. There’s no way this is possible unless it was going to pour down with rain,” Russell said.

“But that’s the sport. You just got to keep on pushing and never give up.”

The result keeps Russell in the title fight, although he now sits 25 points behind Antonelli. After a race that briefly looked set to turn against him through another tyre-related setback, second place at Silverstone became an important recovery before the next phase of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
