George Russell has been identified as a surprising but logical candidate for Red Bull Racing if Max Verstappen leaves the team at the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes signing Russell would be a straightforward decision if Verstappen moved in the opposite direction. In his assessment, Red Bull’s eventual choice of replacement would depend heavily on which team secured the four-time world champion.
Palmer placed Russell alongside McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as the three leading candidates. Russell, however, would carry a specific strategic value if Verstappen’s future involved a move connected to Mercedes.

Verstappen’s Red Bull future has remained the subject of continued speculation throughout the 2026 season. The Dutchman is understood to have a performance-related clause that could allow him to leave at the end of the year despite being contracted until 2028.
The reported clause is linked to his championship position at the summer break. Verstappen is set to enter that period outside the top two in the drivers’ standings, a situation which has been suggested could satisfy one of the conditions in his agreement.
Pressure around the Verstappen-Red Bull relationship has increased following repeated technical problems and reduced competitiveness. He has suffered several mechanical failures, including two high-speed crashes on consecutive weekends caused by a recurring rear-wing issue.
The team environment has also changed significantly from the period that delivered Verstappen’s four consecutive titles. Disagreements over car set-up decisions and the departure of important figures, including former team principal Christian Horner last July, have altered the structure around the 28-year-old.
Palmer’s assessment places Russell at the centre of a potentially major driver-market reshuffle. However, until Verstappen’s future is formally decided, every scenario remains dependent on the choices made by Red Bull, Mercedes and the leading drivers involved.
