Amid the qualifying chaos at the Italian Grand Prix, one name emerged as an unlikely hero: Pierre Gasly. The Alpine driver clinched a stunning pole position, capitalizing on rivals' mistakes, but most importantly, he was the only one to put together a flawless lap when it mattered.
The foundation of Alpine's performance was clearly the Mercedes engine. On the most power-sensitive circuit on the calendar, the Brixworth Power Unit showcased its famous aggressive mapping. However, reducing Gasly's pole to just the engine would be unfair.
Alpine Balanced, Not Just Fast in a Straight Line
The new package that debuted in the Netherlands has made the French car much more balanced. Gasly was not only quick on the straights but also outperformed the Mercedes in corners. The most striking data came from the Parabolica, where he carried more speed than Russell, giving him a perfect exit to the finish line.

Alpine also executed a clever pit exit strategy. They were the last to leave the pits, avoiding the chaos ahead, and used the ideal gap to the Ferraris for a slipstream. Gasly finally had everything: car, engine, track position, and a mistake-free lap.
Russell's Blunder and Ferrari's Hope
That was exactly what others lacked. George Russell was on course for pole, but a braking error at the first chicane, caused by the slipstream from his teammate, cost him precious time. Red Bull also failed to capitalize.
Meanwhile, Ferrari finished where expected, but remains in contention thanks to their new competitive engine. With the right strategy, they could still pose a serious threat in the race.
This qualifying proved that in Formula 1, perfection is everything. Gasly showed that with the right package and flawless execution, a dream pole at Monza is not impossible.
