Audi junior Freddie Slater is set to make his official debut at the wheel of a Formula 1 car during Free Practice 1 outings in Mexico City and Sao Paulo. The German manufacturer, taking over the Sauber team for their maiden F1 season, relies heavily on the young British driver as the spearhead of their newly launched driver academy.
Having secured second place in the Formula 3 standings behind Ugo Ugochukwu as the highest-placed rookie, the 18-year-old is fulfilling Audi's mandatory young-driver requirements. Slater will step into the R26 chassis during FP1 sessions, replacing Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto once each before making his graduation to Formula 2 with Invicta next season.
Reflecting on the milestone, Slater expressed his lifelong dream coming true. "Getting behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car at a grand prix weekend is a big moment for me and something I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid," he stated, emphasizing his dedication to supporting the team's testing program and maximizing on-track learnings.

Audi racing director and DDP chief Allan McNish praised the teenager's steady progress across various junior categories. McNish noted that the upcoming appearances in Mexico and Brazil will grant crucial race weekend mileage, cementing Slater's preparation ahead of his highly anticipated promotion to the F2 paddock.
