The FIA has finally published the results of the latest Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) evaluation for Formula 1 power units, confirming that Red Bull-Ford remains the benchmark. According to the governing body's analysis, covering all races from Melbourne to Budapest, the Red Bull-Ford internal combustion engine is the most powerful on the grid.
Mercedes trails by 2-4% in power, while Audi, Ferrari, and Honda are more than 4% adrift. Notably, Honda's new powertrain, introduced at last weekend's Dutch Grand Prix, was not included in this assessment. In the first quarter of 2026, Mercedes had been granted one additional homologation for each of 2026 and 2027, while Audi, Ferrari, and Honda received two each for this year and next. This consists of additional cost cap allowance and further dyno tests. However, no additional homologations have been awarded this time.
FIA's single-seater director, Nikolas Tombazis, stated that the ADUO review process was thorough and exhaustive. "With the release of the findings of Period 2, we are confident that, based on the quality of the data, its analysis is incredibly robust, giving us a high level of confidence in our findings. We also have to respect the confidentiality and intellectual property of the teams and their power unit manufacturers in disseminating any details from the findings," he said.
This decision is a blow to Red Bull's rivals hoping to close the gap. For Max Verstappen and the team, it reinforces their dominance in the new engine regulations era, putting pressure on other manufacturers to catch up. Tombazis acknowledged that this is the first year of ADUO, leaving room for evolution. "Naturally, there are areas which we may evolve over time, in discussion with all the PU manufacturers," he added.
