Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Fernando Alonso of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team was forced to retire from the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix after suffering significant physical discomfort caused by extreme vibrations from the AMR26.

The issue had already been identified during pre-season testing in Bahrain, with Honda tracing the root cause to characteristics of the power unit and hybrid system integration. While the team indicated progress across the opening rounds in Australia and China, conditions in Shanghai confirmed that the problem remains unresolved under full race stress.

Alonso retired after 33 laps, shortly after team-mate Lance Stroll exited the race earlier with a suspected battery-related issue. Onboard footage showed Alonso repeatedly removing his hands from the steering wheel and shaking them, highlighting the physical strain caused by sustained vibration exposure.

“I probably could not finish the race anyway. The vibration levels were very high today,” Alonso told media, as reported by PlanetF1.

“At one point, from lap 20 to 35, I was struggling to feel my hands and my feet.”

From a technical perspective, the vibrations are closely linked to engine RPM behaviour and energy deployment cycles. Alonso explained that temporary mitigation strategies—such as lowering engine revs—helped reduce vibration levels, but were not viable during competitive race scenarios where full performance is required.

“Some of the steps we took were artificial, like lowering the RPM so everything vibrates less,” he said.

“But in the race, you still need to increase RPM for overtaking or energy recovery, and over time it becomes more difficult and more demanding.”

According to PlanetF1, earlier internal concerns had suggested potential long-term physical effects, including nerve-related risks due to prolonged exposure. However, paddock sources have downplayed the likelihood of permanent damage, indicating that such narratives may also serve to maintain pressure on Honda to accelerate technical solutions.

Trackside chief Mike Krack confirmed that Alonso’s retirement decision was driven by driver discomfort rather than outright performance limitations.

“This is something we have never done continuously before, so it’s a new learning,” Krack said, as cited by PlanetF1.

“If he had been fighting for the win, he might have continued. But given our position, it was a straightforward decision to stop.”

Krack further clarified that the primary impact of the vibration issue is currently related to reliability rather than significant lap time loss, although it does force the team into more conservative operational settings.

“The vibrations are mainly affecting reliability at this stage. We have to be more conservative in certain areas, but it is not costing us seconds,” he added.

With a two-week gap before the Japanese Grand Prix, Aston Martin now has a critical window to address the issue through dyno testing and data analysis. Alonso stressed the importance of allowing Honda sufficient time to fully understand and resolve the root cause.

“From Australia to China, we only had five days, so the engine was exactly the same,” Alonso explained.

“Now we have two weeks, so we need to give Honda more time to understand where the vibrations are coming from.”

While the AMR26 has been considered a midfield contender in terms of baseline performance, this technical limitation risks undermining the team’s consistency and points-scoring potential. Attention now turns to Japan, where any progress on resolving the vibration issue will be pivotal in defining Aston Martin’s competitiveness in the early phase of the 2026 season.
