Fernando Alonso ended the Spanish Grand Prix deeply frustrated. The veteran driver finished 17th, mired at the back, after a collision with Carlos Sainz ruined his race. Nevertheless, Alonso believes the penalty given to Sainz was correct.
“We needed a chaotic race to change our situation, but in the end there wasn't much to fight for,” Alonso said. “Sainz hit me, we had to pit to replace the front wing. The FIA gave a penalty, and that was the right call.”
The incident occurred in the early laps as Sainz attempted a pass in a narrow corner. Contact was unavoidable, and Alonso paid a heavy price, losing positions and valuable time in the pits. He still took a moment to praise the home crowd's support.
On the other side of the garage, Lance Stroll also suffered a cruel fate. The Canadian driver was forced to stop his car in the run-off area on lap 14 due to brake issues. This triggered a Virtual Safety Car that altered the course of the race.
“I had a lot of damage early on. We tried to continue, but the brake pedal was getting longer and eventually locked up. I tried to turn the car in the run-off but didn't have enough power. A difficult weekend in Madrid,” Stroll explained.
With this result, Aston Martin sinks further into the midfield. Alonso has scored few points this season, while Stroll has lacked consistency. Pressure is mounting on the Silverstone-based team to bounce back.
The Spanish race was a heavy blow to Aston Martin's ambitions. Alonso, hoping to capitalise on fan support, had to accept a bitter reality. They must now quickly forget this poor result and focus on the next round to salvage their season.
