Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Fernando Alonso has endured a challenging start to the 2026 Formula 1 season with Aston Martin, prompting renewed scrutiny over the longevity of his career at the highest level of motorsport.
Aston Martin’s new technical partnership with power unit supplier Honda, initially viewed as a critical step toward competitiveness under the latest regulations, has instead been undermined by reliability concerns. Persistent issues with the power unit have left Alonso with two retirements in Australia and China, followed by an 18th-place finish in Japan—marking the weakest start to a season across his 23-year F1 career.
From a performance standpoint, there is little evidence to suggest a decline in Alonso’s driving capability despite being 44 years old. The two-time world champion continues to demonstrate racecraft, consistency, and technical feedback at a high level. However, the limitations of the car have prevented those attributes from translating into meaningful results on track.

The broader context of Alonso’s career also introduces additional considerations. Having recently become a father, personal priorities may increasingly influence long-term decisions, particularly given the physical and mental demands associated with a modern F1 calendar.
At the same time, the prospect of achieving a 33rd grand prix victory appears increasingly distant. Alonso’s most recent win dates back to 2013, and under current performance conditions, Aston Martin would require substantial technical progress to re-enter contention for race victories in the near term.
This combination of competitive limitations, age profile, and evolving personal circumstances has intensified discussion around a potential retirement. Nevertheless, any definitive decision is likely to depend on Aston Martin’s development trajectory over the coming races, as well as Alonso’s internal assessment of motivation and future objectives.
As the 2026 season progresses, attention will focus on whether Aston Martin can resolve its technical shortcomings and restore competitiveness—factors that may ultimately determine whether Alonso continues or brings his Formula 1 career to a close.
