The 2026 MotoGP season continues to be a turbulent campaign for Fermin Aldeguer after Gresini Racing officially confirmed on Sunday at Phillip Island that the young Spaniard will miss the upcoming Grand Prix in Sepang, Malaysia.
This marks a deeply unfortunate situation across multiple fronts, as Sepang will officially represent the sixth MotoGP event of the 2026 season where the Ducati rider has been forced to watch from the sidelines. His campaign has been plagued by setbacks, starting from his delayed debut in Brazil to a severe back injury sustained at Assen, followed by further misfortune in Mandalika.
The former Indonesian GP winner suffered a broken right thumb, which bizarrely occurred not during the initial racing crash itself, but rather out of pure frustration as he slammed his hand against the asphalt while sliding across the track. From a sporting perspective, his championship aspirations for the season are effectively over, leaving him tenth in the standings and under immediate threat from Tech3 rider Enea Bastianini.

Fortunately, the Italian squad secured a reliable replacement in WorldSBK stalwart Iker Lecuona. Having previously demonstrated strong performances when substituting for Alex Marquez, Lecuona is once again ready to pilot the Desmosedici machine in Malaysia, carrying momentum from securing a Sprint championship point during his recent outing at Phillip Island.
While Lecuona aims to provide stable development and solid points for the team in Sepang, the future VR46-bound rider Aldeguer must focus entirely on a full physical recovery before returning to the premier class grid for the remainder of the 2026 championship battle.
