Fabio Di Giannantonio has revealed his amazement at the analytical ability of Valentino Rossi following the 2026 Catalunya MotoGP. The VR46 Racing Team rider admitted he was shocked by Rossi's capacity to identify performance details that are normally visible only through telemetry analysis.
Di Giannantonio concluded a dramatic weekend in Catalunya by delivering VR46's first victory since 2023. However, beyond the race result itself, the Italian highlighted Rossi's contribution from trackside as one of the most valuable aspects of the weekend.
According to Di Giannantonio, Rossi was able to detect subtle aspects of motorcycle performance that are typically identified only after engineers review electronic data. The achievement is particularly remarkable given that Rossi has not raced in MotoGP since retiring at the end of the 2021 season.

"Amazing. The eye that he has is insane."
"I was really surprised because he sees things that you can only see on the data."
"He sees these things, and you are like, 'Were you on track with me?'"
Beyond analysing VR46 riders, Rossi was also able to identify strengths and weaknesses from rival riders simply by observing them from the side of the circuit. Di Giannantonio believes that ability creates a significant advantage when evaluating performance throughout a race weekend.
"He's also able to see a lot of things from the others. So it's really interesting, really helpful and a great opportunity to learn and improve when Vale is here."
Rossi's presence inside the VR46 garage provides more than motivation. The nine-time world champion continues to offer a unique technical perspective that remains highly relevant in modern MotoGP. Di Giannantonio admitted he frequently hopes Rossi will attend race weekends because of the value of his feedback.
"For this, I was asking a lot, 'when are you coming, when are you coming?'"
"Not just for his presence, which is huge, because the energy that he brings is amazing, but because you can really improve a lot with Vale in the garage."
What makes Rossi's insight even more impressive is that he has never ridden the current generation of aerodynamically complex MotoGP machinery. Since his retirement at Valencia in 2021, MotoGP technology has evolved significantly, particularly in aerodynamic development, ride-height devices and overall motorcycle behaviour.
Despite that limitation, Di Giannantonio believes Rossi possesses a unique ability to understand new technical concepts without direct experience. The Italian explained that Rossi can quickly process information from riders and engineers before providing feedback that appears indistinguishable from someone who has actually ridden the motorcycle.
"It's like he has this great capacity of understanding easily what's new, also if he didn't try it."
"You explain, and he gets it, and when he does a comment back, the comment is right. Like if he tried it!"
"It's like, 'wow, how do you do that?' It's incredible."
Di Giannantonio's comments once again underline Rossi's enduring influence within VR46 and MotoGP. Although no longer competing on track, his experience, technical understanding and ability to interpret rider performance remain valuable assets for the team. Following victory in Catalunya, VR46 will hope that the combination of Ducati performance and Rossi's guidance can help maintain momentum as the 2026 MotoGP season continues.
