Crinkled McLaren rear wing among Dutch GP F1 upgrades

McLaren's latest rear wing upgrade raised eyebrows ahead of Formula 1's Dutch Grand Prix thanks to a striking endplate solution. The second part of a development package that first arrived in Hungary includes a new rear wing, revised central bodywork and tweaked rear brake ducts—all aimed at manipulating airflow better at the rear of the car for improved downforce.

The rippled endplate features multiple swage lines and is a step beyond what McLaren has run so far this season. The idea of the ripples is to help better control the airflow coming off the rear tyre and the impact it has on the vortex at the tip of the wing. This trend for such swage lines on rear wing endplates was started in 2023, with Alpine and Aston Martin bringing solutions simultaneously to the Monaco Grand Prix before other teams copied it.

McLaren's latest concept pushes the boundaries more than before in an area heavily restricted by regulations that limit endplate thickness. So, designs like McLaren's have to be intricate yet structurally robust enough to withstand the high aerodynamic forces that rear wings are exposed to.

Meanwhile, Aston Martin has made adjustments to the new front wing concept it brought to the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a reduced chord to the final outboard elements and an upgraded inboard foot. The team also has the option of fitting a new front wing flap to help give a wider range of balance options if needed. Aston Martin has also introduced revised floor fences and a modification to its diffuser winglet.

Ferrari has also introduced floor upgrades aimed at increasing downforce across all speed ranges thanks to a more energised flow to a tweaked rear diffuser. The revisions include an updated board brace layout and vane arrangement, working in conjunction with the changed diffuser and altered beam wing. The technical battle at the top of F1 never stops—every detail can make a difference on track.
