Formula 2 has officially unveiled a revised version of the Dallara F2 2024 car that will carry the championship through the 2027-2029 cycle. The move is designed to keep costs in check while bringing the car's design closer to a Formula 1 look and enhancing its ability to deliver close racing.

F2 CEO Bruno Michel emphasized that the primary goal is to create a car more relevant as a stepping stone to Formula 1. With the chassis, engine, and tyres unchanged for cost reasons and financial sustainability, the most significant updates come in aerodynamics, including redesigned front and rear wings.

Adopting Modern F1 Design Philosophy

The version shown in the Monza paddock features a more conventional rear wing compared to the current car's radical treatment. Meanwhile, the front wing endplates are squarer, with added side winglets, aligning with modern F1 design trends.

FIA Single-Seater Director Nicolas Tombazis revealed that the new car brings a significant downforce increase and a slight drag penalty. As a result, the car is fundamentally more efficient dynamically and has better characteristics for following other cars, making it a better proving ground for drivers aiming to reach F1.

Efficiency Without Sacrificing Performance

The car's dimensions remain identical to the current car, and DRS is retained even though F1 has dropped the overtaking aid in its 2026 regulations. The 3.4-litre V6 turbocharged Mecachrome engine continues to power the cars, running on sustainable fuel and Pirelli tyres.

The most notable change beneath the skin is the addition of a starter motor, aimed at reducing race interruptions caused by stalled cars. Tombazis is confident the weight increase will be more than compensated by improved aerodynamics. Integrating the onboard starter system has also required gearbox modifications.

Alpine test and reserve driver Paul Aron has already sampled the car at the Hungaroring, giving positive feedback on the increased downforce. F2 will continue developing the car both on track and in the wind tunnel, with the first car delivered to teams before year-end and a second following in late January.
