Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The major crash involving Oliver Bearman of Haas F1 Team at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix has intensified calls for the FIA to implement immediate regulatory changes, particularly concerning energy deployment systems under the current ruleset.

Bearman suffered a 50G impact after taking evasive action to avoid Franco Colapinto of Alpine, with a significant closing speed difference—estimated at around 50 km/h—identified as the primary trigger. The disparity arose from differing energy deployment modes between the two cars on the straight.

The incident has placed renewed scrutiny on an issue previously raised by drivers during official briefings, but which had not been addressed prior to the Suzuka race. Bearman lost control after moving to the inside to avoid contact, running onto the grass before colliding heavily with the barrier.

In the aftermath, drivers highlighted the safety implications of the 2026 power unit characteristics, particularly the variability in straight-line speeds during wheel-to-wheel racing. The concern centres on the unpredictability created when cars operate under different energy deployment phases, increasing the risk of high-speed incidents.

Public reaction has further amplified the pressure on the governing body. A RacingNews365 poll showed that 84.29% of respondents believe regulatory changes are necessary before the next round in Miami. A smaller portion, 6.90%, argued that drivers will adapt, while 8.81% suggested more races are needed to fully assess the situation.

Criticism has focused on the sudden speed differentials between cars, which can create hazardous scenarios, especially on circuits with limited runoff or narrow racing lines. This has led to calls for a reassessment of energy deployment strategies and their impact on race safety.

With a break in the calendar before the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA now faces a limited window to analyse data and consider corrective measures. Any decision taken during this period will be critical in balancing technological innovation with safety requirements under the 2026 regulations.

The Suzuka incident is expected to serve as a key reference point in ongoing technical discussions, with potential regulatory adjustments likely to influence both safety standards and competitive dynamics as the season progresses into its next phase.
