Official Formula 1 timing systems faced another major technical glitch during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, sparking immediate controversy in the paddock. The software malfunction unexpectedly saved Nico Hulkenberg from a grid penalty despite blocking a rival during a crucial knockout session.
The incident unfolded as Carlos Sainz was pushing for a fast final lap in the Q2 session. Approaching turn five, the Spanish driver suddenly encountered the Audi machine crawling at a very slow pace directly on the racing line.
It was a clear case of impeding which normally triggers a standard grid penalty for the offender. Surprisingly, the German driver escaped any sanction as race control pointed to extraordinary mitigating circumstances to justify the final verdict.

Prior to the official decision, the driver himself had already resigned to the probability of receiving a three-place grid drop for the blocking maneuver. He admitted that he had not received any radio warning regarding the fast-approaching car behind him.
A subsequent FIA bulletin clarified that the official timing system failed to synchronize correctly with the main F1 data monitors. This bizarre technological failure ultimately forced the stewards to drop penalties and clear the driver for the upcoming race grid.
