David Coulthard can't hide his admiration. The former F1 driver finds it "truly remarkable" that Lewis Hamilton still has the burning desire to compete in Formula 1, even after achieving so much.
Hamilton is no ordinary driver. He is the most successful in F1 history, with more wins, podiums, and pole positions than anyone else. He shares the record of seven world championships with Michael Schumacher and is now chasing a record-breaking eighth with Ferrari.
Last season with the Italian squad was challenging, but 2026 has been a more successful period for the 41-year-old. His performances have left Coulthard impressed.
"I find it truly remarkable that after all these years and all this success, that he still wants to turn up," Coulthard said on the Up To Speed podcast. "His performances this year, he's in front of Charles in the championship. We keep talking about the data doesn't lie. He has been more often than not the stronger driver within Ferrari."
Hamilton currently sits third in the drivers' standings, 24 points ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc. He has adapted to the current generation of cars more favourably than the ground effect machinery of the previous era. Coulthard insists Hamilton has nothing left to prove.
"Now we know this regulation change has made the cars suit some drivers more than others, which I still don't fully understand, quite frankly, because it's still left-right with the steering, throttle and brake," he said. "But Lewis is still at a very high level. How does he have that need, why does he have that need? Because even if he does win an eighth title... I don't need him to be an eight-or-nine-time world champion to go, 'the guy is behind the wheel'. He's earned that. He will live that for the rest of his life."
For Coulthard, who experienced the cut-throat nature of F1 himself, Hamilton's drive is a rare phenomenon. At an age when many would slow down, his hunger to keep racing is a testament to his dedication and love for the sport. Ferrari is fortunate to have him.
